Doctoral Position in Numerical Analysis

(part-time 75%, E 13 TV-L)

Reference No: 2024/250. The preferred start date is between February and May 2025. The position is available initially for 3 years.

The University of Konstanz is one of eleven Universities of Excellence in Germany. Since 2007 it has been successful in the German Excellence Initiative and its follow-up programme, the Excellence Strategy.

The position is mainly funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) within the project “Unfitted finite elements and efficient solvers for fully Eulerian fluid-structure interaction with application to rotating wind turbines”, led by PD Dr. Stefan Frei (University of Konstanz) and Prof. Dr. Thomas Wick (University of Hannover). The main objective is to develop, analyse and implement a geometrically unfitted discretisation for fully Eulerian fluid-structure interactions with large solid deflections, based on a cut finite element approach. A special emphasis is on time discretisation for problems involving time-dependent sub-domains, and on turbulence modelling based on the variational multiscale method.

Your Responsibilities

  • Analysis and implementation of a cut finite element approach for fully Eulerian fluid-structure interactions

  • Development and analysis of time discretisation schemes suitable for problems posed on time-dependent (sub-)domains

  • Implementation and investigation of a turbulence model based on the variational multiscale method

  • Writing scientific articles and presentation at international conferences

Your Competencies

  • Degree in mathematics or a related subject (Diploma or Master)

  • A strong background in the numerical analysis of finite element methods

  • Strong programming skills in an advanced programming language, proficiency in C++ is an advantage

  • Good communication skills in English, German is an advantage

We Offer

  • An interesting project in applied mathematics with application to rotating wind turbines

  • Possible research stays at our collaboration partners in Hannover, London or Trondheim

  • Possibilities to participate in events in Peru, Colombia or Brazil, within our DAAD project “South American Competence Center of Scientific Computing in Health and Climate”

  • Possibility to pursue a dissertation

  • Working in a beautiful landscape

  • Salary according to the rules of TV-L (depending on individual qualification up to salary group E 13 TV-L)

Questions can be directed to Dr. Stefan Frei via e-mail: stefan.frei@uni-konstanz.de.

We look forward to receiving your application (CV, short motivation letter describing your previous research and your motivation for this position, in German or English) until 31.12.2024 via our Online Application Portal.
